During a candid conversation on the popular Off Air Show, Tiwa opened up about her journey as one of Africa’s leading female artists, revealing that despite her groundbreaking achievements, she often feels underappreciated in her home country.

The singer, who has performed on some of the biggest stages in the world and collaborated with global superstars, stated that her role in the global rise of Afrobeats is sometimes overlooked, even though she has consistently represented Nigeria on international platforms with pride and excellence.

‘I’ve worked too hard not to be acknowledged’ — Tiwa Savage

When asked about the level of recognition she feels she’s received compared to her contributions, Tiwa admitted she doesn’t believe she has been given her due flowers. “No. I’m sorry, I don’t,” she said, with a tone that reflected both honesty and disappointment.

She elaborated that while she remains grateful for her fans and supporters worldwide, there’s still a sense that her achievements are often downplayed, especially when compared to the recognition her male colleagues receive.

According to Tiwa, it’s disheartening to see how quickly people forget her impact — from opening doors for female artists in Afrobeats to breaking boundaries that once seemed impossible for women in the Nigerian music space.

“Sometimes I feel like people forget how much work went into getting here,” she shared. “I was one of the first female artists to headline international shows, to sign major deals, and to stand toe-to-toe with global acts. That should count for something.”

Tiwa Savage celebrates fellow artists despite frustration

Despite feeling unappreciated, Tiwa maintained a gracious tone, acknowledging and praising other African stars who continue to elevate the continent’s music scene. She gave special recognition to Ayra Starr, Tems, and Tanzanian sensation Diamond Platnumz for their impressive contributions to the growth of Afrobeats and African pop culture.

She emphasized that her ultimate goal is to see more women thrive in the industry without having to fight so hard for recognition or validation. “I want the next generation of female artists to be celebrated just as much as the men — no double standards, just respect for the art,” she said.

The “Somebody’s Son” crooner concluded by reaffirming her love for music and her fans, noting that she draws strength from those who genuinely appreciate her artistry and legacy, even when the industry falls short in giving her the credit she deserves.

Her heartfelt remarks have since stirred a wave of reactions across social media, with many fans and celebrities echoing her sentiment that Tiwa Savage deserves far more recognition for her years of groundbreaking success and unwavering dedication to Afrobeats.
