According to reports obtained by Instablog, the decision came after a series of viral videos featuring the pair were deemed morally and religiously offensive by the state authorities. The videos, which spread rapidly across social media platforms, captured moments of intimacy and affection between the couple, sparking outrage among conservative groups in the region.

Details Of The Judgement

According to Instablog, the court found the videos to be in violation of the Kano State Censorship and Morality Laws, which strictly prohibit the public display of obscene or indecent acts. The footage reportedly showed Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda displaying romantic gestures considered unacceptable under the state’s moral and religious standards.

Delivering the judgment, Resident Magistrate Halima Wali ruled on Monday, October 20, 2025, that the duo must formalize their relationship through marriage within a 60-day period. She further warned that failure to comply with the order would be treated as contempt of court, potentially leading to further legal consequences.

In addition, the court instructed the Chairman of the Kano State Films and Video Censorship Board to monitor and ensure full implementation of the ruling. This move, the court noted, is to prevent a recurrence of similar moral infractions among social media influencers and content creators within the state.

Reports from the Daily News also revealed that the couple had earlier been arraigned for producing and circulating obscene materials online. Mai Wushirya was previously remanded in custody after explicit clips involving him and Basira Yar Guda surfaced online, drawing widespread criticism and sparking a debate over morality, freedom of expression, and digital regulation in northern Nigeria.

Authorities stressed that their actions contravene existing laws in Kano, which criminalize the production, sharing, or promotion of sexually suggestive or immoral content. The court’s decision, according to legal analysts, reflects the state’s ongoing effort to enforce strict moral codes in line with its Islamic principles.

Meanwhile, despite the intense public interest and the viral nature of the case, both Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda have yet to release an official statement regarding the judgment. Fans and online users continue to flood social media with mixed reactions—some defending the couple’s freedom of expression, while others support the court’s decision as a moral corrective measure.
